Prayer ~ Personal & Together

Prayer is an area where many parents look at their own lives and find lacking. Thus, they can easily neglect training their children in communication with the God who loves them. This step is critical in developing disciples of Jesus as prayer is a critical component of our walks with Him. We are to help open a world to our children where they can praise, cry out to, confess to, and give their cares to their God. Jesus demonstrated a healthy reliance upon the Father as expressed in prayer, and we are to follow suit. It is a gift to be able to approach God's throne boldly to find help in our time of need, and it's one of the most important parts of our lives as a family, and as individuals as well! Utilize these ideas and encouragement to make communication with God a regular and enjoyable time for your child.
Helps
- Download and read over this written overview, available HERE. It is a basic summary of the video above and contains recommended resources, but also contains simple and effective ways to start praying together that are easy for anyone to implement, whether comfortable or not currently with praying aloud!
- Download and print the Prayer Calendar, available HERE. Laminating the calendar and placing it on the refrigerator or other noticeable high traffic area is key in reminding the family to pray. The dry erase markers are your friends, and they work great with this prayer tool as well as others available on this site. The calendar has written goals in addition that are great for reminding us parents to be praying for our marriages, our families, and the needs of those in our lives (school, church, neighbors, etc.).
- Make or purchase a Prayer Journal for your child. Encourage them to take a few moments each day or night to write down their prayer requests, and then have them go back and write 'Answered' by them when God moves in whatever ways seen by them. Journals can be obtained at a local Christian bookseller like the Parable Store in SLO, or at any craft store. Allow them to mark it up and or decorate it to make it their own. Also encourage them to take it with them to church to keep track of missionary prayer requests, and other needs of friends there!
